RULE 504 - CLASSIFICATION OF HEATERS
(Amended 12/13/84)

For the purpose of Regulation V:

1. Class I heaters include any heater so designed or equipped that it will not discharge unconsumed solid carbonaceous material at a rate in excess of one-half (1/2) gram per minute, including return stack heaters, pipe line systems, and coke heaters fueled with coke briquettes or solid coke.
2. Class II heaters include all distilling-type heaters (except return stack heaters) approved by the California Air Resources Board, and solid fuel blocks of petroleum coke. Class II heaters must not be operated at primary air orifice in excess of that specified by the Air Resources Board except for the first ten minutes after the heater is lighted.
