ARB's Emergency Response Team
The California Air Resource Board's Emergency Response Team (ARB/ERT) provides air monitoring, meteorological and
related support services in times of substantial air emission releases that might impair public health. The Board
provides air quality support to local government jurisdictions; the Governor's Office of Emergency Services (OES);
and the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA). The ARB/ERT regularly coordinates information and
planning with Cal/EPA, its boards, departments, and organizations, the OES and the USEPA. Planning and deployment
activities are carried out in accordance with Standard Emergency Management System procedures.
Local responders handle most emergency incidents without state intervention. On occasion, specific requests are
made for air sampling, monitoring, modeling or meteorological resources. The ARB's range of services includes technical
incident photography, near incident meteorological monitoring, meteorological forecasting, hand held pollutant
surveillance, and modeling and emissions assessment. Comprehensive community oriented air monitoring and data uplink
is available using the Rapid Response Trailer. The ARB/ERT on-site activities are coordinated with local or unified
incident command.
For further information, please call Mr. Jeff Cook, ERT Coordinator, at (916) 322-3726. After hours contact should
be made through the OES State Warning Center at OES in Sacramento at (916) 845-8911.
