Local Government Protocols for Greenhouse Gas Assessments

What's New

bullet Air Resources Board Staff invites you to participate in a public workshop on April 22 to discuss development of local government protocols.

Overview

California local governments have taken an active role in fighting climate change and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Local officials need a set of methodologies and data sources to inventory the GHG emissions of their communities and to quantify the impact of local government policies and programs.

ARB staff is partnering with the California Climate Action Registry (CCAR), The Climate Registry (TCR), and Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) to develop local government protocols for GHG assessment.

These protocols will include:

  • A Local Government Operations Protocol: to provide guidance on how to inventory GHG emissions resulting from goverment buildings and facilities, goverment fleet vehicles, wastewater treatment and potable water treatment facilities, landfill and composting facilities, and other operations.
  • A Community Protocol: to address community-wide emissions such as residential, commercial and industrial use of energy, transportation, industrial emissions, etc.

For questions regarding Local Government Protocols, please contact: Dana Papke, Phone: (916) 324-9615

For general questions, contact: Webster Tasat, Manager, Emission Inventory Analysis Section, Phone: (916) 323-4950
