EMISSION INVENTORY SOURCE CATEGORY

310-995-1600-0000 | (46458) | Oil Production Tanks |
METHOD SUMMARY
This category includes the TOG emissions for 1987 from both open top and fixed roof tanks associated with oil production operations. The two major sources of tank emissions are breathing losses and working losses. Breathing loss emissions occur when the tank expands or contracts due to changes in either temperature or pressure. Working loss emissions occur due to changes in the liquid level caused by either filling or emptying the tank itself.
ACTIVITY DATA SOURCE: An oil production tank survey was conducted in 1984. This survey was developed by representatives from oil production companies, air pollution control districts, and the Air Resources Board. Information from this survey includes tank throughputs.
EMISSION FACTOR SOURCE: The equations to calculate breathing and working loss emissions are from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's AP-42, Section 4.3 (4th edition). A control term was added to each equation to account for any control measures that might be placed on the tanks. Also, several variable terms in the AP-42 equations were assigned constant values to reflect typical California data. Finally, survey results were used for the remaining variables.
TEMPORAL DATA: The annual activity occurs primarily during the late spring, summer and early fall. Emissions are independent of weekly activity, although the daily activity occurs mostly during the daylight hours.
DATE OF THE LAST UPDATE: September 1989
GROWTH PARAMETER: Dollar output for oil and gas extraction (SIC 13). (SJVUAPCD parameter is based on barrels of oil.)
