The Air Resources Board (ARB) Enforcement Program routinely issues actions against polluters ranging from minor violations such as smoking heavy-duty vehicles to major violations. Listed below are news releases from some of the ARB's larger enforcement actions. The California Air Resources Board last week imposed Crown Disposal Company, Inc., with more than $88,000 in fines for a two-year failure to inspect their diesel trucks for compliance with the state's smoke emissions standards, and for violation of trash hauler rules.

Service Rock Products paid $42,000 to settle truck emissions violations that occurred in the high-desert area of California in 2005 and 2006.

The Air Resources Board closed over 3,400 enforcement actions totaling nearly $30 million in penalties against entities doing business in California in 2007, a five-fold increase over 2006 penalties that resulted in more than 100 tons of emissions reductions.

Mex-Cal Truckline, also known as Cal-Mex International Broker, Inc., has settled with the State Attorney General's Office for $50,000 for failing to comply with state air quality laws.

The California Air Resources Board recently fined New Bern Transport Corporation, one of Pepsi Bottling Group's overland trucking contractors, $280,125 for violating air quality laws during 2006-2007.

C.K Transport of Lucerne Valley and VRGS Trucking of Fontana recently settled with the California Air Resources Board for $4,000 and $4,125 respectively for failing to properly inspect their heavy duty diesel trucks for compliance with the state's smoke emissions standards.

The California Air Resources Board is warning consumers this holiday season to not purchase air purifiers or air cleaning devices that intentionally generate ozone. Consumers may unknowingly purchase these "ozone generators" from advertisers touting the so-called benefits of "activated oxygen' that can make the air inside your home "as fresh as the air after a thunderstorm."

Todd Plumbing, Inc. of Visalia recently settled with the California Air Resources Board for $5,625 for failing to properly inspect its heavy duty diesel trucks for compliance with the state's smoke emissions standards.

The California Air Resources Board last month settled with A.L. Gilbert Co. and the City of Visalia for a total of more than $30,000 for failure to self-inspect their diesel trucks for compliance with the state's smoke emissions standards.

Brinks, Inc., agreed to pay $147,000 in a settlement agreement with the California Air Resources Board for failure to self-inspect their diesel trucks for compliance with the state's smoke emissions standards.

The California Air Resources Board, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,and the North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District today announced a $5 million settlement with Evergreen Pulp, Inc. that will protect air quality in the Eureka, Calif. area by reducing emissions of particulate matter and hazardous air pollutants from its wood pulp mill by approximately 340 tons annually.

The Air Resources Board recently reached a $700,000 settlement with auto manufacturer Saleen, Inc. of Irvine, California, for selling vehicles not certified to California regulations, which can affect tailpipe emissions and negatively impact air quality.

The California Air Resources Board recently settled with four companies operating in California for a collective $321,875 for failing to properly inspect their diesel truck fleets.

Sierra Pacific Industries, a lumber company headquartered in Redding, California recently paid $13 million to settle allegations of air quality violations at four of the company's Sierra foothills sites.

The California Air Resources Board announced today that it has negotiated a settlement with Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Los Angeles for $528,500 as a result of failure to properly inspect its diesel truck fleet for smoke emissions.

Union Pacific Railroad, headquartered in Omaha, NE, recently paid $120,000 for violations of regulations requiring companies to inspect and verify that their diesel trucks in California meet state exhaust limits.

The ARB has reached a $225,000 settlement with Macco Adhesives, owned by The Glidden Company, for their role in distributing in 316,231 units of Liquid Nails Clear Small Projects & Repair Adhesive with volatile organic compound emissions that exceeded clean air regulations.

The ARB has settled with Husqvarna Outdoor Products (HOP) for a total of $281,600 for selling engines in California that violate state air quality standards.

The ARB announced that Cummins Engine Company has paid $1,092,500 for allegedly violating its 1998 settlement agreement with ARB to perform clean air projects and certify its engines to reduce smog-forming emissions such as NOx (oxides of nitrogen).
