On October 5, 2012, a case with John Paul Mitchell Systems for selling non-compliant Fast Drying Sculpting Spray to household consumers in California that exceeded the 6 percent VOC limit by weight for aerosol and pump spray hair styling products was settled. The products, sold from 2007 to 2010, were labeled as a hair styling product and did not display any finishing hairspray representation which resulted in 19.32 tons of excess VOC emissions attributable to the violation. John Paul Mitchell Systems agreed to pay $212,500.00 to settle the case.
