Gas that simply pollutes less
Compared to ordinary gasoline, California's cleaner-
burning gasoline evaporates less readily and burns
more completely. In fact, it reduces smog-forming
emissions by 300 tons a day. That's 15 percent less
than before.
What's more, cleaner-burning gasoline contains
less of the toxic chemicals that are harmful to our
health. Emissions of benzene, for example, are
now cut in half.

A Clean Sweep:
Statewide use of cleaner-burning gasoline is equivalent to instantly removing 3.5 million smog-inducing vehicles
from our roads and highways.
Endorsed by major car makers
Cleaner-burning gasoline not only meets stringent
air quality standards, it also has the approval of
major car makers, including Chrysler, Ford, General
Motors, and Nissan. They're among the industry
experts and government agencies who participated
in five years of research and development.
Here's what six months of exhaustive statewide
testing confirms: California's cleaner-burning gaso-
line performs smoothly in vehicles of all kinds,
old and new, with no fuel-related problems.
Off-road tests conducted on watercraft, lawn and
garden tools, utility engines, and other motorized
equipment echo similar results.
Available in the usual grades
Like previous gas, cleaner-burning gasoline is available
in the same octane levels. And when you consider the
health advantages, it's actually a grade better.
As far as gas mileage goes, a car that
usually gets 30 MPG,
now gets slightly more than 29.5 MPG on cleaner-burning
gasoline.
That's less than a half-mile difference per gallon. Of course, any changes in miles per gallon varies
by vehicle and driver.
More value per gallon
Reducing our state's air pollution problem
depends on cleaner-burning gasoline,
which costs, on average, about a dime more
per gallon to produce. While some of the
increase may be reflected at the pump,
it's a small price to pay when you weigh
the clean-air benefits.
It's also important to remember that gas
prices are determined by supply and
demand, not by the State of California.
Crude oil prices, production costs, and
taxes also factor in.
Clearly, a better solution
California's cleaner-burning gasoline is the
perfect vehicle for improving air quality. And
it's
another example of the Air Resource Board's
ongoing quest to clear the air of toxic chemicals
and pollutants.

No Change In Performance: More than 800 cars and trucks of various makes, models, ages, and mileage performed like they should when driven five million-plus miles on cleaner-burning gasoline.

Fueled by the need
for cleaner air
Despite significant improvements
over the last 25 years, more than
90 percent of Californians still breathe
polluted air.
With 2.4 million cars and trucks,
plus millions of boats, lawn mowers,
and other gas-powered equipment in
use, we burn more than 35 million
gallons of gasoline every day. While
today's cars run cleaner, California
has more drivers on the road than
ever before. Which means more
smog and greater health risks.
Thanks to cleaner-burning gasoline,
we can breathe easier. That's
because it improves air quality by
dramatically reducing car emissions
of pollutants known to cause or con-
tribute to health problems such as
heart disease, lung disease, and cancer.
Half the Problem: Gas-powered
vehicles and equipment contribute
about 50 percent of the air
pollution in California.
