Comment | Dear CARB members: As a Merced County Supervisor for 18 years and a member of the Merced County Association of Government’s (MCAG) Governing Board I would like to go on record as opposing MCAG’s recent action taken regarding SB 375’s emission reduction targets set by your board in 2010. Unfortunately, none of the scenarios presented to the Governing Board by our staff achieved the Valley’s targets. However, more can and should be done in Merced County to achieve the goals set out by this important law. As you know, CA is facing a serious water shortage in 2014. This will hurt the Valley more than any other region in terms of our agriculture-based economy. I find it ironic that in an area where so many jobs are dependent on farming, the MCAG Board overwhelmingly voted for a scenario that will consume the most farmland and promote the continued decline of the Sierra Nevada snowpack by doing the least amount of work to reduce climate changing gases. The San Joaquin Valley has an important place in the culture, economy and heritage of our State. Please do not leave the Valley behind. Our residents deserve to live in a County, region and State that value their long-term livelihood and health. Sincerely, Deidre Kelsey Supervisor, District 4 Merced County |
