Comment | To the Members of ARB: I believe that California needs to cut this major source of dangerous air pollution, which is affecting all of us on a daily basis. Construction equipment is the second largest source of diesel pollution in the state, accounting for 20% of particulate matter(soot) and 16% of smog-forming Nitrogen Oxides (NOx). These pollutants are two of the biggest pollution hazards for public health in California and throughout the country. I personally have had a difficult time dealing with these pollutants even in our own small neighborhood, as there has been so much construction going on in the last few years. It is hard to believe that we live only three blocks from the ocean. Almost every day we are subjected to the awful smell of diesel and gas pollution. We rarely get the chance to smell any clean ocean air. These pollutants impact health, resulting in tens of thousands of prematuredeaths in the U.S. from heart and lung disease annually, as wellas hospital admissions, emergency room visits, absences fromschool or work, and restricted activities related to asthmaattacks. Children are especially vulnerable because their lungsare still developing. Please pass the new rule which supports stronger air standards for California's construction equipment. Sincerely, Charle Hazlehurst |
