Subject | Zero-Emission Vehicles |
Comment | I am writing you concerning the proposed changes to the Zero-Emission Vehicles mandate. I cannot understand why you would postpone the urgently needed move toward ZEVs in California. It is obvious that these cars are needed to reduce the vast amount of pollution that we are creating with combustion automobiles. There is an obvious market for these vehicles - if even 2% of Prius owners could choose to buy an Electric powered car, there would already be over 20,000 on the road today. Once upon a time California was both the country and world leader in working to prevent pollution and global warming with it's ZEV mandate of the 1990's. At this point, haven't we seen that it was a mistake to abandon the ZEV mandate. There is a market for these cars - the Toyota RAV4 Electric Car which was made based on california's ZEV mandate is now selling USED for $65,000!! That is over $20,000 more than it originally sold for. Please, please do the right thing for California's environment and let us regain our position as the leader in ecologically friendly policy. I ask you to (1) re-commit to the full 25,000 ZEVs the automakers promised, (2) create a separate requirement for plug-in hybrids that lets them replace dirtier vehicles, and (3) provide incentives for plug-in hybrids that have the most on-board electricity storage. |
