Subject | Support the ZEV Mandate |
Comment | I support your agenda to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2020. The most promising way to reach this goal is to give consumers the choice to buy Zero-Emission Vehicles (ZEVs). Please do not reduce the number of ZEVs required of automakers by 90%, settling for only 2,500 from 2012-2014. Even mandating 25,000 vehicles is a compromise, but progress nonetheless. I, along with thousands of other citizens, am asking that the Air Resources Board: 1. Require the full 25,000 ZEVs that automakers had promised for 2012-2014, and 2. Create a separate requirement for plug-in hybrids that lets them replace the dirtiest vehicles in CARB's regulations, rather than the cleanest ZEVs. American auto manufacturers have proved that they are capable of producing highly performing electric vehicles, after the original mandate was instated. We can do even better, and the Board has the power of influence. Certainly the ZEV Mandate is an important facet of the California governmental response to global warming, among landmark bills like AB 32 and SB 1 from recent legislative years. CARB is charged with the duty to protect the quality of air, a most essential component in the ecological commons. Industry can actually be a partner in this responsibility to preserve and improve air quality. The Cabrillo College Student Senate, representing 15,000 students, will discuss and take a stance on the issue this week. I ask that CARB take this into consideration when it deliberates on March 27. Thank you, Ryan Kaplan Legislative Representative, Cabrillo College Student Senate |
