Subject: No REDD Rice Manifesto from 30 countries
Comment:
To the California Air Resources Board,
On behalf of over 125 organizations from 30 countries, I
respectfully submit the No REDD Rice Manifesto to you to request
that you cancel the proposed Rice Cultivation Projects Compliance
Offset Protocol and all existing and proposed Compliance Offset
Protocols under the Cap-and-Trade Regulation. Carbon offsets, REDD
and carbon trading are false solutions to climate change and must
be excluded from California’s Global Warming Solutions Act AB32.
The vast diversity of the signatories of the No REDD Rice Manifesto
includes social movements of Indigenous Peoples, peasants, organic
farmers, anti-GMO activists, environmentalists, scientists, women,
youth, and cooks from California and all regions of Mother Earth.
The world is uniting to stop the State of California from using our
sacred staple crop for carbon offsets.
Our food is not a sponge for your pollution. Our agriculture can
not be used as an excuse for California's big polluters like
Chevron to continue to spew greenhouse gas emissions and destroy
the climate. Our climate and our future are not yours to destroy.
Mother Earth and her peoples respectfully call on you to
definitively reject rice offsets and cut emissions at source.
Sincerely,
Tom B.K. Goldtooth
Executive Director of the Indigenous Environmental Network
