arbcombo -- White paper on the health benefits of physical activity is now available
Posted: 28 Mar 2017 09:49:01
Air Resources Board staff have posted a white paper on the health benefits of physical activity and air pollution exposure while walking and bicycling for transportation. Researchers are continuing to study how the built environment, the human-made space in which people live, work, and play on a day-to-day basis, can impact health and physical activity. There is overwhelming evidence that physical activity has wide-ranging positive health benefits including disease prevention, improved heart health, brain function, and reduced cancer risk in individuals of all ages and ethnicities. New community design strategies and Smart Growth principles have the potential to increase the opportunities for community members to exercise as well as walk and bike for transportation, but if individuals are walking and bicycling on high-traffic roads, their exposure to air pollution may also be increased. However, recent evidence indicates that the health benefits of outdoor physical activity outweigh the harms of increased air pollution exposure in most environments. The recently posted white paper, titled “Physical Activity: Health Benefits, the Role of the Built Environment and Impacts of Air Pollution,” summarizes the published literature on the health benefits of physical activity, and specifically looks at the research evaluating the health benefits of walking and bicycling for transportation. Additionally, research results from studies analyzing the combined health effects of increased physical activity and air pollution exposure are discussed.
