Cummins Incorporated has received a conditional certification for their integrated diesel-fueled auxiliary power system (APS), which achieves the necessary particulate matter control to allow for its use on commercial vehicles equipped with a 2007 or subsequent model year diesel-fueled primary drive engine. The unit plumbs into the vehicle’s exhaust system and utilizes the engine’s particulate matter control device to clean up its own particulate matter emissions. Currently, the Cummins APS is only compatible with 2008 ISX engines, also manufactured by Cummins. The certification for the Cummins APS is conditional upon the manufacture of a “Verified Clean APS” vehicle label that meets the specifications set forth by the California Air Resources Board. Although Cummins has not yet produced a label that satisfies these specifications, they are authorized to distribute these units for use in California with a temporary “Verified Clean APS” vehicle label that will be replaced once an approved label is produced.
