The following message is directed to the attendees of the 2008 CARPA summit. To: CARPA Conference Attendee On behalf of the CARPA Steering Committee, we would like to share some of the recent steps we have taken to continue the work we began at the Air Quality in Emergency Response Summit held October 15 - 16, 2008. First, we are pleased to release the Summit Proceedings (www.arb.ca.gov/carpa/proc_rpt_v2.pdf), a report that will serve as the springboard for future CARPA activities. It contains a summary of identified gaps, needs, and some suggested practices to improve the consistency and effectiveness of our response efforts. Second is the revised CARPA web page (www.arb.ca.gov/carpa/carpa.htm). The site has been updated with a variety of links for the Summit themes (Data, Data to Message, and Message to Audience), as well as individual presentations and the Summit Proceedings available for download. Our next step is launching subcommittees designed to build on our experiences and to develop approaches to the issues and gaps identified during the Summit. It is through the subcommittees that we will explore ways to enhance interagency collaboration at the planning and operational levels and continue sharing ideas across themes, disciplines, and interests. We encourage you to continue your participation by signing up for a subcommittee. If you are interested, please e-mail your information to the subcommittee lead listed below. ‘Data’ (monitoring, modeling, meteorology, laboratory, and data) – Jeff Cook (jcook@arb.ca.gov) and John Kennedy (kennedy.john@epamail.epa.gov) ‘Data to Message’ (health interpretation of data and assessments) – Shelley DuTeaux (sduteaux@arb.ca.gov), ‘Message to Audience’ (public information, messaging and outreach) – Dimitri Stanich (dstanich@arb.ca.gov) Please also be on the lookout for a survey from CARPA requesting feedback on the Summit and ideas on what kinds of services and products CARPA might include in future activities. Finally, we are very pleased to share recent news that CARPA will receive the 2008-09 award for Innovation in Government from the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) Sacramento/State Capitol Chapter. This award recognizes CARPA and the work of bringing together the statewide community across intergovernmental lines to work collaboratively on air quality in disasters. It is an honor to be recognized by this prestigious organization, and especially in this category. We share this honor with Summit attendees and those of you who have offered valuable ideas and time to this enterprise. Thank you again for the sincere interest shown during the meeting and for participating in this unique and important endeavor. Please feel free to share this letter and information about CARPA with others who might be interested.
