Some Bad Climate News and Some Good. Senators Barbara Boxer and
John Kerry have delayed the introduction of their long-awaited
climate change bill until the end of this month — one more sign
that Congress will be hard pressed to get a bill to President
Obama’s desk before the international summit on global warming in
Stockholm in December. Posted.

Groups Seek Billions in Climate Bill for Resource Adaptation . A
coalition of nearly 600 conservation, outdoor and recreation
groups is calling on the Senate to dedicate billions of dollars

Study Tracks Birds' Movements Due to Global Warming. A recent
study published by UC Berkeley researchers Monday analyzes the
flight of birds from their natural habitats due to warming
climate conditions. The researchers tracked the breeding ranges
of 53 bird species from 82 different sites in the Sierra Nevada
mountain range over the course of the past six years. Posted.

U.S. Plans Could Derail Copenhagen Deal, Europe Says. European
negotiators hoping to forge a compromise with the United States
and developing countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions say
the Obama administration's proposals could undermine a new global
treaty and weaken the world's ability to stave off the worst
effects of climate change. The London Guardian reports that key
differences have emerged between the United States and Europe
over the way carbon reduction targets would be counted. Posted.

Senate Delay On Climate Bill Could Stymie Copenhagen Talks.
Climate change activists reacted sharply yesterday to indications
from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) that
cap-and-trade legislation may have to wait until 2010, warning
that the delay could derail international negotiations in
Copenhagen. Annie Petsonk, international counsel for
Environmental Defense Fund, said she fears the U.N. talks slated
for December will flounder without a clear plan from President
Obama to move climate legislation through Congress. "The
appearance to the international community would be that the U.S.
Congress is just adrift," she said. Posted.

A Truly Green Oakland - #1. In recent years "going green" seems
to have become the fashionable thing, especially in the Bay Area.
As encouraging as the trend is, it is simply a trend - "going
green" for most is a matter of appearance more than an actual
ethical or ideological pursuit. While I don't want to insult
anyone who has an interest in changing their lifestyle to promote
a healthier world, it is important to understand what will and
what won't save the environment. Posted.

Rolling Medical Clinic Brings Relief, Education To Young Asthma
Sufferers. That sounds like a simple task. But for children like
Smith who suffer from asthma, being able to take a deep breath is
not always guaranteed. On Monday, the third-grader at Anna Yates
Elementary School in Emeryville was one of the first students to
visit the Breathmobile, a rolling medical clinic in a specially
outfitted Vanhool bus. Posted.

Washington—For the first time in nearly 30 years, the
Environmental Protection Agency plans to limit the quantity of
toxic metals that coal-fired power plants release into waterways.
The agency said Tuesday that equipment required to reduce
pollution in the air has increased harmful contaminants in water
discharged by power plants, particularly heavy metals such as
selenium, cadmium, mercury and lead. Posted.

Doctors Tell Politicians To Fight Climate Change. London—A weak
response to climate change could be catastrophic for
international health, leading doctors said in two British medical
journals Wednesday. Experts have previously warned that global
warming could mean a spike in diseases including malaria and
dengue fever, and that higher temperatures would result in food
shortages, sanitation problems and extreme weather events like
hurricanes and floods. Posted.

North America Backs Plan To Cut Greenhouse Gases. United
Nations—Small island nations gained North America's powerful
backing Tuesday for a plan to convert the U.N. ozone treaty into
a tool for phasing out some of the globe's most powerful
climate-warming gases. The Obama administration announced the
United States, Canada and Mexico now support using the treaty to
require cuts in powerful greenhouse gases known as
hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs. Posted.

Report: Great Lakes Toxic Cleanups Lagging Badly. Traverse City,
Mich.—Cleanup of the most polluted sites in the Great Lakes is
moving so slowly it will take 77 more years to finish the job at
the existing pace, according to a federal report. The U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency still does not know the full
extent of the problem even though the highly contaminated spots
were identified two decades ago, said the report by the agency's
inspector general. Posted.
