Californians Flock To The 'Disneyland' Of Climate Change.
Hundreds of delegates from nonprofits, state and local government
and green-tech firms are making the rounds in Copenhagen, sitting
on panels, schmoozing with other policy wonks and buying furry
hats. Jake Mackenzie, a city councilman from Rohnert Park,
Calif., is looking forward to telling the world about Sonoma
County's efforts to combat climate change -- he even has an
appointment with a Scottish official to talk about harnessing
energy from waves. Posted.

Prospect of Global Warming Pact Fades in Copenhagen (Update2).
World leaders will arrive in the Danish capital of Copenhagen in
the next three days to agree on an accord to fight global
warming. There may be nothing to sign. Envoys from China, the
U.S., the European Union and India, the world’s top polluters,
have bickered, quarreled and walked out during talks among 193
nations. They’ve left presidents and prime ministers a choice
between a fudge or a flop for the accord that the United Nations
framed as the most comprehensive deal to curb global warming.

California Voters Could Get Say On Pursuit Of Reduced Emissions.
A California lawmaker wants to let voters decide whether to
suspend implementation of the state law that is intended to cap
greenhouse gas emissions at 1990 levels by 2020. Assemblyman Dan
Logue, R-Linda, says he’s getting encouragement from truckers.
“Absolutely, truck drivers are supporting it. They have the most
at stake because it will cost them millions of dollars,” Logue
told Land Line Now. Posted.

California Air Resources Board Finds Unsafe Levels Of
Formaldehyde In New Homes. Today the California Air Resources
Board (CARB) released the first ever study of indoor air quality
in new homes. The report was alarming. The researchers found the
majority of homes had ventilation rates that did not meet code.

Ethanol Lobby Urges State To Halt Low-Carbon Fuel Standard.
Ethanol lobbyists in Washington yesterday made a last-ditch
attempt to send California's low-carbon fuel regulation back to
the drafting stage with a plea to a key state official to reject
the rule on the grounds that its architects did not follow proper
procedures. In a letter to Susan Lapsley, director of
California's Office of Administrative Law, the Renewable Fuels
Association charged the state Air Resources Board with
circumventing the required administrative process after it
tentatively approved the low-carbon fuel standard, or LCFS,
earlier this year. Posted.

RFA Calls To Remove Low Carbon Fuels Standard. In the US, the
Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) has called on California’s
Office of Administrative Law (OAL) to reject the Air Resources
Board’s (ARB) Low Carbon Fuels Standard (LCFS) rule currently
under review. The RFA has highlighted numerous instances where
ARB violated established procedures by failing to properly
address stakeholder comments on the LCFS proposal. Posted.

Climate Talks Near Deal to Save Forests. Negotiators have all
but completed a sweeping deal that would compensate countries for
preserving forests, and in some cases, other natural landscapes
like peat soils, swamps and fields that play a crucial role in
curbing climate change. Posted.

My Word: America must learn from Chinese on cleaning the air. I
JUST returned from an amazing conference in China on low-carbon
cities. Several Chinese cities and American cities met during the
same week as the summit between President Barack Obama and
Chinese President Hu Jintao to discuss the cities' progress in
reducing CO2 emissions while, at the same time, improving their
economies. Posted.

Eugene Robinson: Sarah Palin's strange climate 'epiphany'. SARAH
PALIN is such a cold-eyed skeptic about the Copenhagen summit on
climate change that it's no surprise she would call on President
Barack Obama not to attend. After all, Obama might join other
leaders in acknowledging that warming is a "global challenge." He
might entertain "opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions." He might even explore ways to "participate in
carbon-trading markets." Posted.

PG&E customers will get cleaner power and more of it. OAKLAND —
The chances are high that Christmas tree lights shining in
downtown Oakland and in nearby areas are powered by fossil fuels
churned out at a local power plant. That could change with the
installation across the city of massive 45-ton vaults and cables
larger than a burly man's biceps, which will carry cleaner energy
to Bay Area customers. Posted.

Climate Conference Emits Its Share Of Carbon. Copenhagen—If they
fail to reach a climate deal in Copenhagen, world leaders flying
in their private jets and huddling in five-star hotels will have
little to show for their efforts beyond a big, fat carbon
footprint. Posted.

Outcome Unclear As Leaders Arrive At Climate Talks. Copenhagen —
The success of the U.N. climate conference hung in the balance
Tuesday as China and the U.S. deadlocked over whether Beijing
will allow the world to check its books and verify promised cuts
in greenhouse gas emissions. Posted.

World Mayors Compare Notes On Saving Climate. Copenhagen—The
Obama administration should have sent federal stimulus money not
to the U.S. states, but to cities, where "most of the
environmental damage is done and most of the chances for
improvement are," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday.

Sen. Kerry Uncertain on Fate Of Cap And Trade. U.S. Senator John
Kerry raised the possibility on Wednesday that a major energy and
climate change bill he is trying to craft might not contain the
"cap and trade" mechanism for reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

(Bcn) -- Several hundred truckers marched at the Port of Oakland
and in front of Oakland City Hall Tuesday to protest new
emissions standards that could force them to go out of business
on Jan. 1. The protest began at about 9 a.m. when about 300
truckers gathered at Shoreline Park and marched on Middle Harbor
Road to the offices of the shipping company APL. About 150
truckers then took buses downtown for a rally on the plaza in
front of City Hall. Five leaders of the group went inside City

Cleaner Air For Oakland -- But No One Wants To Pay For It. A
raging battle over who should shoulder the overhaul of old, dirty
trucks. Green City On Jan. 1, the Port of Oakland and surrounding
areas will get cleaner air — and as many as 1,000 truck drivers
may lose their jobs. That's when the port's Clean Truck
Management Plan (CTMP) takes effect, setting strict requirements
for trucks operating in the port. Posted.

San Francisco May Expand Smoking Ban. San Francisco, which was
at the vanguard of the anti-smoking movement more than a decade
ago when it became one of the first American cities to bar people
from lighting up in the workplace, now is poised to enact much
tougher restrictions on smoking in public places. Smokers no
longer would be allowed to puff away near the doors, vents and
operable windows of any building - restaurants, shops, offices
and housing complexes. Diners no longer would be able to smoke at
outdoor tables. Posted.

Down The Chimney. Mister Roberts finds himself in a political
box. “With that, I’ll be quiet.” County Supervisor Ron Roberts
had just wrapped up a blistering dress-down of board colleagues
and staff of the California Air Resources Board (CARB), upon
which he has rested his political keester for nearly 15 years.
This was happening last Wednesday in Sacramento, the same day the
remainder of the Board of Supervisors also had gathered in San
Diego to slog through a lengthy land-use hearing over the
proposed Merriam Mountains master-planned development of 2,700
homes west of Interstate 15 near Escondido. Posted.

Study Suggests Greater Sea Level Rise from Warming. New
York—Global warming in this century might raise sea levels more
than expected in future centuries, says a study that looked at
what happened at a time when Neanderthals roamed Europe. Unless
global warming is curbed or expensive measures are taken to hold
back rising water, the projected sea level rise could submerge
about one-third of Florida, southern Manhattan, much of
Bangladesh and almost all the Netherlands, for example,
researchers said. An expert praised the work but cautioned that
such projections can't be made with precision. Posted.
