 AIR POLLUTION

5-State Study Finds Unsafe Levels of Airborne Chemicals Near Oil
and Gas Sites
...risk. Dirk DeTurck had a years-old rash that wouldn't go
away, his wife's hair came out in chunks and any time they
lingered outside their house for more than an hour, splitting
headaches set in. They were certain the cause was simply
breathing the air in Greenbrier, Arkansas, the rural community to
which they'd retired a decade ago. They blamed the gas wells all
around them. But state officials didn't investigate.

CHECK BEFORE YOU BURN

Strictest wood-burning rules in nation begin Saturday
For 25 years, Valley air pollution cops have squeezed businesses,
farms and industry in an effort to slash emissions and meet
ever-tightening air quality standards.
And now, “We have to get the public to do its part,” said Seyed
Sadredin, director of the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution
Control District.

CLIMATE CHANGE

How to Talk About Climate Change in an Oil-and-Gas Mecca
Houston doesn't seem like the sort of place where a progressive
climate-change agenda could thrive. But then again, it might not
seem like the sort of place that would elect a lesbian Democratic
mayor, either. But Annise Parker, the leader of the nation's
fourth-largest city, sees all of this as evidence of a
particularly Texan, and particularly Houstonian, mindset:
practical, pragmatic, not especially interested in history.

Regulator Takes Focus on Climate Change Preparedness
With a calm demeanor and in a somewhat scientific tone he doesn’t
mind using while explaining his stance on something, Mike
Kreidler stood by his decision to call out the insurance industry
and the rest of the nation’s insurance commissioners for being
unprepared. Gutsy considering that preparing for things is at
the core of what the industry does.

DIESEL EMISSIONS

Dirty Shipping Fuel Smogs Up China's Port Cities
...Defense Council, the fuel burned by ocean vessels may contain
sulfur levels that exceed by 100 to 3,500 times the level in
diesel for automobiles. The upshot, the report finds, is that
“one container ship cruising along the coast of China emits as
much diesel pollution as 500,000 new Chinese trucks in a single
day.” Because several of China's major cities are located on
the eastern coast, port pollution has direct consequences for
human health. Independent studies cited by NRDC show that
container...

Researchers slam study showing cellulosic production ups
emissions
Researchers affiliated with the Agriculture Department and
Department of Energy are pushing back against a study from
earlier this year that questioned the greenhouse gas benefits of
producing ethanol from cornstalks, husks and other agricultural
wastes. In a series of correspondence published online today in
the November issue of Nature Climate Change, the scientists
charge that the study out of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln,
was based on unrealistic assumptions about the amount of crop
waste that cellulosic ethanol companies intend to use.

Prius pushback: Hybrid inspires some hatred
When people ask Chris Bellios what he drives, he says it's a
Toyota — a black one. "The stigma that goes with owning a Prius
is palpable," said Bellios, 43, who loves his Prius so much he's
owned two. Other drivers don't share his love. "I have never been
tailgated so much as I have been with this car. No matter how
fast I'm driving."

38 federal agencies reveal their vulnerabilities to climate
change — and what they’re doing about it
The Obama administration on Friday plans to publish a small
library's worth of climate change documents, outlining 38 federal
agencies' vulnerabilities to global warming and how they will
address them -- as well as a separate and even larger set of new
government-wide plans to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and
achieve new targets for sustainability.

EPA must look at human health and the environment in updating
ozone standards
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency might be preparing to
unveil a major air pollution rule change shortly after midterm

relating to the health and ecosystem impacts of ground-level
ozone and could have significant impacts on infrastructure
projects across the nation.

Cli-Fi is Real
...struggling with a blockbuster, as it wrestles with a titanic
human species trying to survive its hyperconsumption and
narcissism, on a fucking lucky rock spinning through space. It's
also why continuing reports from the too-conservative
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are treated like
fiction by sellouts, and always exponentially worse. The latest
(finally) explains that global warming is abrupt and
irreversible, and that our children will inherit an Anthropocene
