Pope's Climate Change Encyclical Could Sway U.S. Opinion:
Scientists
Some U.S. scientists are expressing hope that Pope Francis'
encyclical on global warming embracing the view that it is mostly
caused by human activities will change public opinion in the
United States, where the issue is highly politicized.

The Pope, the Economy and the Case for Climate Action
This week Pope Francis issues his long awaited Encyclical on
Climate Change. The Pope's message should galvanize support for
climate action for the Catholic community and well beyond. It
will speak not only to the 5,000 Catholic Bishops, nor only to
the 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide, but to all people of
goodwill who are open to the moral context of climate change.

Poll shows Americans are starting to worry about climate change
again
You know how this country has had something of an “it’s
complicated” relationship to our feelings about the climate?
Well, a new Pew poll out yesterday shows that more Americans are
starting to worry about the climate again — after taking a break
around 2008, presumably to fret over other things, like our
country’s complete financial dysfunction.

EMISSIONS TRADING

China's national CO2 market seen starting late 2016, early 2017
China's long-awaited countrywide carbon trading scheme is likely
to be ready by the end of next year or early in 2017, an official
with the state planning agency said on Wednesday. China, the
world's biggest emitter of climate-warming greenhouse gases, is
aiming to bring its emissions to a peak around 2030 and has
pledged to make full use of market mechanisms to meet targets.

Study: A third of global groundwater basins are overstressed
Satellite data show people are overdrawing water from some of the
world's largest groundwater basins. Researchers from the
University of California, Irvine say it's unclear how much water
is left in the most overburdened aquifers. The problem is
expected to worsen with climate change and population growth.

Germany Mulls Boosting Electric-Car Incentives Under Carbon-Goal
Pressure
Several European countries--including Norway, The Netherlands,
and France--aggressively promote electric cars as a way to reduce
vehicular carbon emissions. But despite its large domestic car
industry, Germany is not among them. German government support
for electric cars has been lukewarm at best, but now it appears
that could change soon.

Minnesota Is Where You Will Find The New Solar Gold Rush
Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes, is also the epicenter of a
solar energy boom. Both SolarCity and SunShare announced plans

program to make solar electricity available for purchase to
renters and others who don’t want to or can’t install solar

OPINION

Pope Francis’ call to be ecologically ‘pro-life’
Abortion is a polarizing issue in America, with half the country
believing individuals should be free to choose, and 44 percent
believing we must safeguard life. But “pro-life” can encompass
far more than life in the womb; in fact, life on Earth is
threatened — and we are the ones aborting the ecosystems on which
we rely. We’re being called to be ecologically pro-life.

Why the Pope Is Concerned About Climate Change, and You Should be
Too
Climate change has been in the headlines for years. I tell my
undergraduate students that the U.S. has been discussing climate
change for their entire lives. It was 1992 when countries around
the world came together in Rio de Janeiro and committed to
preventing dangerous climate change.

Why Biofuels Can't Replace Oil
“There is growing concern about the role of biofuels in rising
food prices…and doubts about the climate benefits. This has led
to serious questions about their sustainability,” Renewable Fuels
Agency. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007′s
Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS2) orders the use of at least 36
billion gallons of transport biofuels by 2022 …

Cheaper prices spur U.S. gasoline demand: Kemp
Strong growth in demand for refined fuels such as gasoline and
diesel is helping to rebalance the global oil market, according
to most observers. “Recent oil market strength ... stems partly
from unexpectedly strong oil demand growth,” the International
Energy Agency explained in its June monthly oil market report.

California’s water strategy deserves an open debate and real
solutions
In response to the worst drought in our state’s long memory, our
public institutions – with one unfortunate exception – are
stepping up. Gov. Jerry Brown and the Legislature passed
long-overdue groundwater and sustainable water investments
through last year’s $7.5 billion water bond.
