 AIR POLLUTION

Paris to stop traffic when air pollution spikes
The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, has won a long-running battle
with the French government to introduce emergency traffic bans in
the city when air pollution spikes. The move to speed up the
introduction of alternate driving days for cars with odd and even
number registration plates was announced after pollution spiked
in the French capital on Monday, just weeks before the city is
due to host a crucial UN climate change summit.

Delhi's air pollution is causing a health crisis. So, what can be
done?
For a few hours one morning two weeks ago, private cars were
banned from driving into the heart of old Delhi. It was hard to
tell at the messy road junction in front of the historic Red Fort
and the shopping street of Chandni Chowk, though, which was still
crammed with auto-rickshaws and buses barrelling along the roads
with seemingly little regard for any traffic rules.

California Gov. Jerry Brown: Time is Running Out For Cleaner
Energy
Climate change is adding urgency of the normally slow process of
updating the world’s energy infrastructure. That was the
sentiment from two high-profile leaders—California Gov. Jerry
Brown and former BP CEO John Browne—who have spent decades
pushing the energy industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

China, France Say Climate Pact Should Have 5-Year Reviews.
The Chinese and French presidents announced Monday they have
agreed that a global climate change pact should require countries
to review their emissions pledges every five years, in an
important signal four weeks before world leaders meet in Paris.
France is proposing the automatic increase of countries'
emissions targets in a climate deal to be thrashed out at a U.N.
conference beginning at the end of November.

Climate Change Kills the Mood: Economists Warn of Less Sex on a
Warmer Planet
Climate change has been blamed for many things over the years.
Never, until now, has anyone thought it was possible to see it as
a kind of contraceptive. Hot weather leads to diminished “coital
frequency," according to a new working paper put out by the
National Bureau of Economic Research. Three economists studied 80
years of U.S. fertility and temperature data and found that when
it’s hotter than 80 degrees F, a large decline in births follows
within 10 months.

Ontario is playing politics with power – again
Do you understand your electricity bill? Me neither. All I know
is that it keeps going up. There was a rate increase in May, and
Ontarians got another one this week. The provincial government
made it sound like nothing. An increase of only 3.4 per cent, on
average.

The Papal Encyclical and Climate Change Policy
June 18, 2015, Coral Davenport, writing in the New York Times,
was the first in the press to note that the encyclical on the

the world to confront climate change."
