Chinese customs officers seize 120,000 fake face masks: media.
Customs officers in China's commercial capital, Shanghai, have
discovered 120,000 fake respiratory masks, supposedly made by
U.S. diversified manufacturer 3M Co, state media said on
Wednesday. News of the seizure came as air pollution has engulfed
the capital, Beijing, with authorities declaring a "red alert"
there because of dangerously high levels of smog.

China offers bonus to coal power plants to meet emissions rules.
Getting China's cash-strapped coal-fired power industry to comply
with tough emissions rules and tackle choking smog that has
recently blanketed the capital and other major cities will take
incentives as well as fines. In a change in tack after years of

EPA head says U.S. pollution rules could help China tackle smog.
The Obama administration's new pollution rules are under attack
from Republican critics at home, but its top environmental

solution to the air pollution currently choking its major cities.

No-burn order issued for today. The region will be under a
“no-burn” order today, meaning indoor fireplace use and outdoor
wood-burning will be prohibited due to pollution concerns. The
South Coast Air Quality Management District issued the order
Tuesday for all residences in the South Coast Air Basin, which
includes Orange County.

Beijing authorities use technology in pollution battle. Some
Beijing residents use smokestacks to predict smog: Smoke drifting
gently upward means stagnant air where smog will accumulate,
while smoke blowing away from the mountains indicates fresher
winds and clear air ahead. But the city government uses more
sophisticated technology for its forecasts, including the one
used this week to trigger Beijing's first-ever red alert for
smog.

Scientists just discovered a surprising new factor that could
make global warming worse. In a surprising new study, scientists
say they’ve pinned down the climate factor most strongly tied to
variations in terrestrial carbon storage — that is, the ability
of plants and other features of the Earth’s surface to take up
carbon, thus preventing it from going into the atmosphere.

How the buildings we live in add to the threat from global
warming. When we think of the culprits of climate change, we
tend to picture coal-burning power plants, airplanes and
traffic-clogged highways. But there are other offenders — the
places we live, work, study and shop. From urban high-rises to
squat suburban malls, buildings are responsible for about 40% of
global energy use…

Blocking the Sun Is No Plan B for Global Warming. Planet-wide
geoengineering schemes might work—or backfire. Either way, there
is no getting around the need to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere.
More than 300 watts per square meter of sunshine hits the top of
Earth's atmosphere each year. A third is reflected and the sky,
sea and land absorb the rest.

UN CLIMATE TALKS

California is leading way on climate change. The selection of
Paris as the site for negotiating a landmark deal on climate
