CLIMATE CHANGE Republican presidential candidates go their own way on climate change despite Paris agreement. A tale of environmental suspense unfolded throughout 2015: Would nations finally reach a global agreement to fight climate change? Record drought and heat, wildfires, Pope Francis' encyclical on the environment, President Obama's Clean Power Plan and his photogenic trip to Arctic Alaska — all became plot points in the developing narrative. http://www.latimes.com/nation/politics/la-na-sej-year-ahead-environment-20151230-story.html Climate Change Is Threatening Our Seafood Supply. It’s no secret that eating seafood is good for us, but will there be enough to go around after El Nino? A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that due to a decline in micro algae in our waters around the globe, there is a shortage of food available for young fish, which is causing them to die within days. This finding comes from a review of a global database of 262 commercial fish stocks in dozens of large marine ecosystems around the globe. http://www.forbes.com/sites/phillempert/2015/12/29/climate-change-is-threatening-our-seafood-supply/ VOLKSWAGEN VW Buybacks, Payments For Hard-To-Fix Diesels Will Cost Billions. Hundreds of thousands of diesel-VW owners are waiting to find out how their cars will be updated to meet emissions standards, once modifications are approved by regulators. And Volkswagen Group has clearly been tarnished by the emission-cheating scandal, which affects 11 million cars worldwide. But the costs of the entire affair remain to be tallied; some analysts have said that the 6.5 billion euros ($7.1 billion) set aside several months ago will not be nearly enough. http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1101623_vw-buybacks-payments-for-hard-to-fix-diesels-will-cost-billions DROUGHT Biomass Power Could Help California's Dying Forests. Millions of dead trees in California create a huge risk of wildfire. It’s led Governor Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency that will require utilities, power plants and state agencies to work together. Biomass power plants can create energy from those dead trees, but the biomass plants alone may not be able to solve the crisis. http://www.capradio.org/articles/2015/12/30/biomass-power-could-help-californias-dying-forests/ California ends 2015 changed by drought, anxious for El Nino. The fourth year of drought and a promising El Niño did more than just fill the news pages of 2015. Water news changed the relationship between Californians and water, inculcating permanent cultural shifts. Brown lawns are now OK. Native plants are popular. Buckets in showers, not always toilet-flushing, low-flow faucets? Check. Check. Check. http://www.dailynews.com/general-news/20151229/california-ends-2015-changed-by-drought-anxious-for-el-nino VEHICLES North America Must Plan for Old Electric Car Batteries. The U.S., Canada and Mexico must devise alternative uses for end-of-life electric vehicle batteries by 2030, when more than 1.5 million electric vehicles in North America are expected to reach the end of their useful life, according to a new report from the Commission for Environmental Cooperation. Recycling of current batteries is driven by the value of the nickel and cobalt they contain, but that no longer may be if new types of batteries contain less valuable components, said the report published Dec. 22 by the Montreal-based agency that administers the environmental side agreement to the North American Free Trade Agreement. http://www.bna.com/report-north-america-n57982065571/ Hyundai To Launch 400-Mile Fuel-Cell SUV By 2020: Report. Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell crossovers were first delivered to customers in Southern California last year, and almost 100 vehicles have been leased since then. But now Hyundai faces competition from two dedicated vehicles that haven't been converted from existing models. Unlike the Tucson, the 2016 Toyota Mirai and 2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell ride on their own platforms, with their own distinct styling. http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1101621_hyundai-to-launch-400-mile-fuel-cell-suv-by-2020-report GREEN ENERGY Top five energy stories to follow in 2016. The world's energy landscape changed dramatically in 2015. The coming year could bring even greater upheaval. In 2016, world leaders will start implementing the climate change deal they struck in Paris in December, which will require a huge infusion of renewable energy. Solar and wind advocates will continue to do battle with supporters of coal, oil and gas, in the United States and elsewhere. In the California desert, a recently extended solar tax credit could jump-start development — or not. http://www.desertsun.com/story/tech/science/energy/2015/12/30/top-five-energy-stories-follow-2016/77895364/ California is in a drought emergency.
