bus-act -- Updated Agenda for the Advanced Clean Transit Technology Symposium

Posted: 05 Feb 2016 10:56:08
The agenda for the Advanced Clean Transit Technology Symposium
(Symposium) has been updated. It now identifies the moderator and
panelists for each session in the order in which they will
present. The link was corrected. Please find the updated agenda
posted at http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/bus/meet/tsagenda.pdf .

As a reminder, the Symposium will provide transit agencies and
other interested stakeholders with updated information on
advanced clean transit bus technologies, associated
infrastructure, and fuels. The location and time for this
symposium is as follows:

Advanced Clean Transit Technology Symposium
10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday, 02/08/2015
Byron Sher Auditorium, CalEPA Headquarters Building
1001 “I” Street, Sacramento

All final materials, including speakers’ biography,
presentations, etc. will be posted on the Advanced Clean Transit
website at: http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/bus/bus.htm. The
Symposium will also be webcast and can be watched at
http://www.calepa.ca.gov/broadcast/?BDO=1. If you have any
questions regarding the Symposium, please contact Yachun Chow,
Manager, Zero Emission Truck and Bus Section, at
yachun.chow@arb.ca.gov or at (916) 322-7450.

Background

The Fleet Rule for Transit Agencies was initially adopted in 2000
and requires reductions in diesel particulate matter and oxides
of nitrogen emissions from urban buses and transit fleet
vehicles. It also requires zero emission bus purchases for
transit agencies with 200 or more urban buses. In July 2009,
through Resolution 09-49, the Board directed the Executive
Officer to delay the zero-emission bus purchase requirement due
to technology readiness concerns, and to conduct a technology
assessment on the readiness of zero emission bus technologies
before reinstating purchase requirements. In January 2010, ARB
issued an advisory (Mail-out #10-04) with the postponement of the
purchase requirement for zero-emission buses.

In November 2015, staff presented the technology assessment
results of fuel cell electric vehicles, battery electric
vehicles, hybrid vehicles, natural gas vehicles, and low NOx
engines to the Board with the commercialization stage of each
technology highlighted. Staff concluded that low-NOx engines
will become commercially available soon and that zero emission
buses have similar performance and reliability as conventional
buses and are in the early commercialization phase. Therefore,
staff is currently in the process of working with stakeholders to
develop an Advanced Clean Transit proposal that will incorporate
these advanced clean technologies while transitioning public
transportation to zero emission technologies.
