AIR POLLUTION

Admin critics move against ozone standard. Condemnation thundered
down from the highest precincts of Capitol Hill last October when
U.S. EPA tightened the air quality standard for ozone. But only
now, more than six months later, are lawmakers taking a tangible
first step toward challenging the new benchmark. A House Energy
and Commerce subcommittee will hold a hearing on H.R. 4775…

ALISO CANYON

Aliso Canyon site to stay closed despite blackout risk. The Los
Angeles-area natural gas storage site where methane leaked will
not reopen without a full safety check, even with the risk of
power blackouts this summer, energy officials said Friday. At a
town hall meeting in Woodland Hills, near the site of the Aliso
Canyon facility, top regulators said they viewed protecting local
residents as paramount.

CLIMATE CHANGE

NASA: Global warming is now changing how Earth wobbles. Global
warming is shifting the way the Earth wobbles on its polar axis,
a new NASA study finds. Melting ice sheets - especially in
Greenland - are changing the distribution of weight on Earth. And
that has caused both the North Pole and the wobble, which is
called polar motion, to change course…

Climate change lawsuit by 21 youths takes big step forward. The
federal government and big energy companies lost an important
round Friday in their effort to block a climate change lawsuit by
young plaintiffs who contend the U.S. is failing to protect them
from the harmful effects of greenhouse gas emissions. U.S.
Magistrate Judge Thomas Coffin in Eugene rejected motions by the

Trying to Put a Price on Big Oil's 'Climate Obstruction' Efforts.
Oil giants and trade groups spend an estimated $115 million per
year blocking climate policies. ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch/Shell,
and three oil-industry groups together spend $115 million a year
on advocacy designed to “obstruct” climate change policy,
according to new estimates released by Influence Map, a British
nonprofit research organization.

Nations seek rapid ratification of Paris climate deal, four-year

Hollande are due to sign December's pact…

Shrinking salmon stressed by climate change – study. Fish in the
salmon family may see slimmer waistlines as water temperatures
rise, according to a new study published in the journal Ecology
of Freshwater Fish. Fish in the remote waters of the Eg-Uur River
in Mongolia have already undergone significant stress due to
climate change.

State's cap-and-trade program raises price of gas by 11 cents a
gallon, report says. The California Legislature's nonpartisan
analyst estimates the state's pollution tax has raised gasoline
prices by 11 cents per gallon and diesel prices by 13
cents, according to a month-old letter released Thursday. The
pollution tax costs drivers collectively about $2 billion a year,
Legislative Analyst Mac Taylor said.

PJM finds low gas prices could ease climate rule compliance.
Natural gas prices lower than previously expected could drive
coal plant retirements and ease the early years of compliance
with federal climate regulation for a major regional power grid.

states, last week, presented a reference case for comparing

VEHICLES

Next Nissan Leaf to be followed by electric SUV, sports car?
While the Tesla Model 3 and Chevrolet Bolt EV have gotten the
lion's share of electric-car press lately, the Nissan Leaf
remains the best-selling plug-in vehicle in history. The
200,000th Leaf was sold globally sometime in January, putting the
electric hatchback at roughly twice the volume of any other
plug-in electric car to date.

Rush on Teslas doesn't yet herald major EV market. Electric
vehicles aren't breaking into the mainstream any time soon -- and
it will take more than excited Tesla fans to get there, said
experts. More than 325,000 people have placed preorders for Tesla
Motors Inc.'s Model 3. That's significant in light of stagnating
EV adoption in the past; global EV sales reached 500,000 last
year. That's still less than a half of a percent of total global
auto sales.

A Californian problem: too much solar. While most of the world
considers how to put more renewables into the energy mix and
drive down carbon dioxide emissions, California grapples with a
different problem: what to do with its surplus solar. A leader in
developing renewables -- particularly solar -- the state has
brushed up against the limitations of its grid infrastructure.

OPINIONS

COLUMN-Is U.S. gasoline consumption overstated and if so by how
much? Kemp. Strong growth in U.S. gasoline consumption has been
one of the most important factors supporting oil prices in 2016,
but some analysts question whether the official data is
overstating the strength of gasoline demand. U.S. gasoline
consumption has been running at a record seasonal rate since
February…

sun. To his friends and colleagues, Lawes, 67, is like the
grandfather of solar energy. Since 1978, he has been the owner
and president of Insoltech Solar in Laguna Beach. His tiny
company is not Elon Musk's high-flying SolarCity.
