inuseag -- Ag. Engine Buyers Advisory Posted: 21 Dec 2007 07:53:15
The California Air Resources Board (ARB) has posted an advisory on the sale and purchase of diesel engines used in agriculture. The advisory (located at http://www.arb.ca.gov/diesel/ag/inuseag.htm ) is especially directed at noncertified or "Tier 0" diesel engines manufactured prior to 1996. California regulates the sale, purchase, rental/lease, and operation of diesel engines, including diesel engines used in agriculture. ARB has recently become aware that used Tier 0 diesel agricultural irrigation pump and gen set engines advertised on EBay, Craig's List, and similar websites do not meet Stationary Diesel Engine airborne toxic control measure (ATCM) emission standards for the installation and use of agricultural engines. ARB has notified these websites about the ATCM and requested that they publish disclaimers with ads for Tier 0 engines. ARB and the local air districts are in the process of educating thousands of California growers about agricultural engine amendments to the ATCM, which became effective on October 18, 2007. We are concerned that growers could unknowingly purchase engines that they will not be able to install and use. Therefore, we encourage all stakeholders to help us spread the word that local air quality districts should be consulted prior to selling or purchasing diesel agricultural pump or gen set engines, particularly used engines. The appropriate local air district can be determined using grower county or zip code information at http://www.arb.ca.gov/app/dislookup/dislookup.php . Alternatively, air district contact information (including specific agricultural engine program contact persons, if available) may be obtained by contacting Barbara Cook at (916) 323-0440 or firstname.lastname@example.org, or, Jon Manji at (916) 327-1507 or email@example.com.
