CLIMATE CHANGE

Radical energy shift needed to meet 1.5C global warming target:
IEA. A radical shift in the energy sector, cutting emissions to
zero by around 2040, is needed to limit the global rise in
temperature at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) the
International Energy Agency (IEA) said on Wednesday. The IEA's
first report on meeting the climate target aspired to in the
Paris agreement…

Paris Climate Deal Is Too Weak to Meet Goals, Report Finds. As
negotiators meet in Morocco to hammer out details of the landmark
global climate change accord reached in Paris almost a year ago,
the independent International Energy Agency warned that the
nearly 200-nation deal was too weak to meet its avowed
temperature target. The I.E.A.’s annual World Energy Outlook
stated that reaching the Paris targets to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions was possible…

One looming consequence of climate change: Small island nations
will cease to exist. for later. As United Nations climate change
talks get set to wrap up on Friday in Marrakech, Morocco,
negotiators representing the Alliance of Small Island Nations
underscored the need to speed up efforts to combat global warming
and adapt to its effects. "I'm happy about the progress that we
are making, but we have a lot more work to do," said Hugh Sealy,
a climate change consultant for the United Nations who helped
negotiate last year's Paris agreement…

Paris climate deal at risk unless countries step up plans, says
watchdog. International Energy Agency chief says current
government pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions are
inadequate. The Paris agreement on climate change risks failure
unless countries come forward with more ambitious and detailed
plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions, the world’s energy
watchdog has warned.

Another victim of climate change: kelp. While increasing at some
sites, kelp, a useful indicator of an ecosystem's health, is
undergoing a worldwide decline. Kelp, with its incredible ability
to overcome biological stressors and grow back quickly, is an
important indicator of how healthy the ocean is. As such, two
studies published recently in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences…

Global warming record crumbles due in part to freak Arctic
warmth. The planet's streak of heat milestones continued into
October, which came in as the second-warmest such month on
record, according to NASA. The top three warmest Octobers on
record worldwide have each occurred in the past three years, NASA
reported on Tuesday, with October 2015 ranking as the warmest of
them.

Canada criticized over fossil fuel expansion at Morocco climate
summit. The Liberal government’s twin pursuits of expanded
foreign markets for Canadian fossil fuels and global action on
climate change are getting some unfavourable notice at an

How Trump could put U.S. on par with North Korea on climate.
President-elect Donald Trump's transition team is considering
making the United States the only country on Earth that is not
part of the U.N. climate change process except for North Korea.
Withdrawing from the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC) would allow the United States to formally exit the Paris
Agreement in one year rather than four, as mandated by last
year's climate deal.

Carbon capture still viable under Trump, experts say. David

carbon capture technology are strong. Still reeling from the

camiones.

Trucks are inspected to reduce pollution of air. The day the air
resources with the California Highway Patrol Board inspected
trucks in Winterhaven to verify that they have the necessary
equipment to reduce air pollution. "Here in the area of Imperial
we know that we have high pollution that affects all who live
here in the area and also to those who live in Arizona," says
Eloy Florez, specialist of pollution with the air resources
Board. According to the American Association of lungs, California
is on the list of most polluted places in the United States, so
it is important to do these inspections of the trucks.

Biofuels Play Central Role in Brazil’s Climate Goals. The Paris
Agreement on Climate Change entered into force in September,
starting a coordinated effort by the world’s governments to
reduce carbon dioxide emissions and limit climate change impacts.
It’s far from the end, though. Entering into force starts the
hard work—meeting each nation’s decarbonization targets.

Alaska Airlines flies passengers using wood-based biofuel. The
isobutanol blend used cellulose from logging industry waste wood.
On Monday, an Alaska Airlines flight took off in Seattle and
touched down in Washington, DC. As it flew, fossil fuels made
from material that sat in the ground for millions of years
burned, as they do every day in our travels.

U.S. refineries hurt by loss of access to cheap crude. U.S.
refineries are losing their competitive advantage to overseas

California committed to car emissions targets regardless of
Trump’s decisions. Investors who pushed up shares of GM, Ford and
Fiat Chrysler on a bet that Donald Trump will gut clean-air rules
may have forgotten another player with a big say: California. The
state has more people and cars than any other, giving its
regulators an outsize influence on what auto makers build.

Calif. to deploy thousands of EV charging ports. It got messy,
but California's largest utility is one step closer to installing

it can deploy the charging stations and have ratepayers foot the
$130 million bill as part of California's mission to reduce
carbon emissions from transportation.

OPINIONS

Trump Can't Kill The Electric Car. Come January, President-elect
Donald Trump will be ferried around in a very thirsty set of
wheels: The Presidential Limousine, nicknamed "The Beast,"
reportedly gets less than 4 miles to the gallon, on average.
What's more, Trump's fossil-forward energy approach means he
should be open to letting us, the little people, tool around in
less-efficient vehicles, too.

Donald Trump, Help Heal the Planet’s Climate Change Problem. Dear
President-elect Trump: Well, you won. You were not my choice, but
you’re soon going to be my president. I have no intention of

during the campaign. They hurt real people, debased our political
process and erased social norms vital for keeping our diverse
society together.

If you want to tackle carbon emissions let indigenous people
control their land. Global leaders must acknowledge that land and
forests owned and managed by local communities are more likely to
prevent deforestation and deliver greater carbon storage. n my

Marta have been described as holding the most important
concentration of threatened wildlife on Earth.
