CAP AND TRADE

Extension of cap and trade recommended to hit 2030 GHG goal. An
extension of California's economywide cap-and-trade program for
carbon emissions is needed to hit the state's ambitious target
for cutting greenhouse gas pollution by 2030, a proposal from the
state's air board said Friday. The California Air Resources
Board's "2030 Target Scoping Plan" recommended using cap and
trade as the main mechanism…

AIR POLLUTION

China sets 2020 target for clean air in big cities. China aims to
provide clean air in its largest cities for 80 percent of each
year, or more than 9-1/2 months, by 2020, up from a figure of
76.7 percent last year, the country's cabinet said on Monday.
Amid concern that pollution was stirring social unrest, China
launched a campaign in 2014 to revitalize its tainted air…

pollution. Variable speed limits, redesign of speed bumps and ‘no
idling’ zones near schools among Nice recommendations. Speed
bumps should be redesigned, speed limits made variable on
England’s motorways, sometimes dropping as low as 50mph, and a
congestion charge considered in more cities to cut air pollution
and save lives, health experts have said.

Agencies were urged to address Paramount metal emissions years
before air toxics scare. he recent discovery of high levels of a
cancer-causing pollutant in Paramount has alarmed residents and
led authorities to crack down on dangerous emissions from two
metal-processing plants. But the interventions last week by air
regulators and health officials followed years of slow and
sporadic steps by several agencies in response to health
concerns, say residents and activists in the small city southeast
of Los Angeles.

Environmental groups suing to stop air watchdog agency’s rollback
of air pollution rules. A recent court filing by the nation’s
most powerful environmental groups has grown from support for
ridding Southern California’s air of lung-damaging particles to a
shot across the bow of a Trump administration purportedly set on
weakening federal clean air laws.

During last period of global warming, Antarctica warmed 2 to 3
times more than planet average. Following Earth’s last ice age,
which peaked 20,000 years ago, the Antarctic warmed between two
and three times the average temperature increase worldwide,
according to a new study by a team of American geophysicists. The
disparity – Antarctica warmed about 11 degrees Celsius, nearly 20
degrees Fahrenheit, between about 20,000 and 10,000 years ago…

Fake news tries to blame human-caused global warming on El Niño.
Climate scientists and real science journalists pushed back,
holding the post-truth crowd accountable. Human carbon pollution
is heating the Earth incredibly fast. On top of that long-term
human-caused global warming trend, there are fluctuations caused
by various natural factors. One of these is the El Niño/La Niña
cycle.

Climate Change Refugees: Military Officials Warn Of 'Unimaginable
Scale' Of Displacement With Global Warming. Barring a shift from
current trends, the growing threat of climate change will cause a
refugee crisis of “unimaginable scale” and could prove to be the
greatest security threat in the 21st century, according to senior
military officials interviewed by the Guardian. Rising greenhouse
gas levels in the atmosphere which trap heat and lead to global
warming…

Climate change and the 'fake news' problem. Last week, the House
Committee on Science, Space and Technology tweeted out a climate
change news story that annoyed a lot of climate scientists. The
story was published on Breitbart News Network, whose former
executive chairman, Steve Bannon, is now President-elect Donald
Trump's chief strategist.

GREEN ENERGY

Trump brings Koch network's anti-green-energy stance from the
fringe to the center of power. When an obscure nonprofit group
attacked one of California’s signature green-energy projects this
summer — warning a congressional panel that the embrace of solar
energy would lead to crippling hikes in electricity bills —
officials in the state shrugged off the testimony as noise from
the fringe.

OPINIONS

Cashing In on Climate Change. You’ve saved your money and amassed
a surplus. You’ve read a few books on investing and gleaned the
basics — the importance of diversification, of investing for the
long term, and of buying and holding rather than trying to beat
the market. But you also know that human-caused climate change
will (if it hasn’t already) start eroding economic output.

Through climate change denial, we're ceding global leadership to
China. Remember when China was the climate-action outcast, the
obstacle standing in the way of progress in the global fight
against a warming planet? What a difference a few years — and an
election — can make. Over the past few weeks, world leaders,
delegates to the climate change conference in Marrakech and
activists everywhere…

Independent source of news and analysis, from experts in the
academic community. Until recently, measuring air pollution was a
task that could be performed only by trained scientists using
very sophisticated - and very expensive - equipment. That has
changed with the rapid growth of small, inexpensive sensors that
can be assembled by almost anyone.
