AIR POLLUTION

Indians look for solutions only when toxic pollution soars. The
truth of New Delhi’s toxic air finally hit home for Rakhi Singh
when her 3-year-old son began to cough constantly early this
year. She bought air purifiers for her home. When a thick, gray
haze turned the view outside her home into a scene from a bad
science fiction film last month, she bought pollution masks.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Japan's CO2 emissions drop 3 pct to 5-year low in FY2015. Japan's
greenhouse gas emissions fell 3 percent to a five-year low in the
financial year through March due to lower power demand, growing
renewable energy and the restart of nuclear power plants,
government figures showed on Tuesday. Emissions fell for a second
straight year to 1.321 billion metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent…

Japan Is Obsessed With Climate Change. Young People Don’t Get It.
At 12:30 p.m. on a recent Wednesday, the Ministry of the
Environment offices here were almost completely in darkness, lit
only by the silver-blue glow of computer screens. All of the
government ministry offices are supposed to go dark for an hour
in the middle of each day to save energy and reduce greenhouse
gas emissions.

Climate Change Will Bring Wetter Storms in U.S., Study Says.
Decades of research (and perhaps your own recent experiences on
hot, humid days) have suggested that climate change will lead to
an increase in big storms that cause flash floods, landslides and
other natural disasters. Now, a new study shows that such intense
precipitation will most likely increase across the continental
United States, but with important regional variations.

Climate change could make extreme downpours 3X more likely, says
study. New climate models have allowed scientists to simulate
future thunderstorms. Some states already being ravaged by
flooding might expect more of the same, if global warming
continues at current level Extreme downpours could happen almost
three times as often, and with a 70 percent increase in
intensity, throughout the United States…

Warming U.S. Could See Extreme Rains Increase Fivefold. When the
skies open up and deluge an area, the results can be
catastrophic, with roads washed out and homes destroyed by the
resulting flash floods. Such extreme downpours are already
occurring more often across the U.S., but a new study finds that
as global temperatures rise, storms could dump considerably more
rain and skyrocket in frequency.

Whopper rainstorms to increase fivefold under climate change —
study. Extreme rainstorms are five times more likely to happen
across parts of the United States by the end of the century as a
result of global warming, according to a new study. The sharp
increase in extreme downpours will be spread throughout the
country, including some parts now suffering from drought, the
study published yesterday in Nature Climate Change has found.

Gov. Brown: U.S. won't 'go rogue on climate' under Trump.
California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) yesterday expressed confidence
that President-elect Donald Trump will soften his stance on
addressing climate change. Trump has called climate change a
"hoax" and has said he'll gut Obama administration climate
policies. Several of his potential nominees for heads of U.S. EPA
and the Department of Energy are people who have…

DROUGHT

Last-minute push for California drought legislation creates
friction between Feinstein and Boxer. House Republican leaders
and California’s senior senator announced Monday a new attempt to
pass legislation that would increase water deliveries to San
Joaquin Valley agribusiness and Southern California. The 90-page
proposal was added to a water infrastructure bill that Congress
is expected to vote on this week before adjourning for the rest
of the year.

House, Senate leaders reach deal on Calif. drought, Flint. House
and Senate leaders reached agreement Monday on a bipartisan bill
to authorize $170 million for Flint, Michigan, and other cities
beleaguered by lead in drinking water, and to provide relief to
drought-stricken California. A vote on the water-projects bill
could be held this week as Congress wraps up its legislative work
for the year.

DIESEL ACTIVITIES

Sacramento shortlisted for electric semi-truck factory that could
bring thousands of jobs. Nikola Motor Co., a Salt Lake City-based
startup that builds electric vehicles and parts, has shortlisted
the Sacramento region for a manufacturing plant that the company
has said could bring thousands of jobs, according to the Greater
Sacramento Economic Council. The company, which was founded in
October 2014, designs and manufactures electric vehicles, energy
storage systems and electric vehicle components.

EPA chief defends methane regs as cost-effective. U.S. EPA chief
Gina McCarthy argued yesterday that if Republicans nix limits on
methane emissions, they will forgo opportunities to lower
electricity prices and level the playing field for businesses.
GOP lawmakers have said they intend to employ the rarely used
Congressional Review Act to eliminate the agency's standards for
new sources of emissions…

VEHICLES

Toyota to expand hybrid system development to further cut
emissions. Toyota Motor Corp said on Tuesday it will expand the
development of its gasoline-hybrid technology over the next five
years to speed up the introduction of lower-emission engines in
the face of stricter global emissions standards. The announcement
was the latest by the Japanese firm aimed at making cars
"greener" as global automakers…

Ford will ask Trump to cut fuel-economy rules, CEO says; 'no
demand' for hybrid, electric. Last week, the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency ruled that existing emissions limits for
passenger cars for 2022 through 2025 should remain in place.
It's a decision that is already opposed by lobbyists representing
the auto industry, and possibly by the incoming Trump
Administration.

GREEN ENERGY

Google to run solely on wind, solar in 2017. Published: Tuesday,
December 6, 2016 Technology giant Google has said its data
centers will run on 100 percent renewable energy by next year.
Last year, the company — run by Alphabet Inc. — used as much
energy as the city of San Francisco. "We are the largest
corporate purchaser of renewable energy in the world," said Joe
Kava, Google's senior vice president of technical infrastructure.

Asbestos use dropped 16% in 2015 — USGS. The U.S. Geological
Survey has cataloged a gradual decline in domestic consumption of
the carcinogenic mineral asbestos in 2015, even as the
chloralkali industry took a larger chunk of the pie. In a report
released online today, USGS said that total asbestos consumption
dropped to 343 tons last year, a 16 percent decline from 406 tons
in 2014.

OPINIONS

The next big step for California on climate change. The
California Air Resources Board is proposing an important climate
change reduction plan that will help residents breathe easier,
eat healthier and reduce food waste. The Short-Lived Climate
Pollutant Reduction Strategy aims to cut so-called super
pollutants that remain in the atmosphere for less time than
carbon dioxide but inflict much greater harm on people and the
environment.

Economists: Climate Change Will Hurt US Economy Sooner Than
Expected. We have all seen the statistics. 97% of climate
scientists agree that global warming is happening and is caused
by human activity. Donald Trump and his team of zombie advisers
prefer to say that scientist are split on that question but that
is clearly a lie they tell themselves to justify their magic
realism view of the world. But what do economists have to say?

Paradigm Shift in Fuels as Carbon Intensity Surpasses Biofuel
Volumes as Key Metric. Renewable diesel and conventional
electricity lead the race to meet new emissions reduction goals,
and diversified energy companies are well-placed, says Lux
Research. Traditionally policies to promote greener
transportation fuels have focused on mandating volumes of
specific biofuels that must be used.

The reality behind the Climate Reality Project. Globalization
creates winners and losers. It’s an incontrovertible, if
inconvenient truth, and the same could be said for global climate
change. Helping countries win the battle to lower emissions is
the animating force behind "24 Hours of Reality," a global event
being hosted today by Nobel Laureate and former U.S. Vice
President Al Gore.
