AIR POLLUTION

London breaches annual air pollution limit for 2017 in just five
days. Brixton Road in Lambeth has already broken legal limits for
toxic air for the entire year, with many other sites across the
capital set to follow. London has breached its annual air
pollution limits just five days into 2017, a “shameful reminder
of the severity of London’s air pollution”, according to
campaigners. By law, hourly levels of toxic nitrogen dioxide must
not be more than 200 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m3)…

EPA seeks public input on ozone reg's 'good neighbor' data. U.S.
EPA is seeking public input on preliminary interstate ozone
modeling data that will play a key role in guiding states'
efforts to comply with "good neighbor" requirements embedded in
the stricter ozone standard set last year. The agency has set a
90-day comment period on the data, which are geared to detailing
the downwind movement of ozone…

CLIMATE CHANGE

Energy-sector CO2 to stagnate without Clean Power Plan — EIA.
Coal use and energy-sector carbon emissions in the United States
would both flatline without the Obama administration's climate
standards for power plants, according to a U.S. Energy
Information Administration outlook released yesterday. Natural
gas and renewable power would grow to meet increasing power
demand, although the specific levels will depend on how much each
cost, the annual report notes.

Meet an animal pathologist uncovering climate mysteries. Kathy
Burek often spends her days cutting up creatures of all sorts in
Alaska and trying to figure out what killed them. She is one of
only two board-certified anatomic pathologists in the state and
the only one who regularly goes out into the field with knives
and vials to harvest samples. With ecosystems in Alaska shifting
as the climate changes, strange events are the new normal.

DROUGHT

How California went from drought to dangerous rain and snow.
After years of dry conditions, California is getting its winter
back. A series of storms over the last month have dumped feet of
snow and rain in some parts of Northern California. And Southern
California had its wettest December in several years. Heavier
precipitation in the north of the state has slowly been easing
the drought, though it is not over. Storms over the next few days
are expected to continue this trend but also bring dangers.

NWS: Northern California now on pace for 'wettest water year on
record'. After many long years of waiting, California's drought
relief may finally be here. Snow has piled up over five feet in
some parts of the Sierra Nevada since the Sunday storm. And while
the first snow survey of the year actually came in below average
in terms of snow accumulation, there are reasons for optimism.

Volkswagen AG and the U.S. Justice Department are nearing an
agreement to resolve the government's civil and criminal

Sununu: ‘New Hampshire is open for business’ In inaugural speech,
governor calls for tax cuts, energy projects. Right to work,
supporting Northern Pass, cutting business taxes and a
three-month freeze on new regulations. Them’s fighting words, yet
Gov. Chris Sununu intermingled them in his inaugural speech
Thursday with platitudes about the need to work together after an
ugly election cycle. On the other hand, he also promised that he
would be blunt.

OPINIONS

Our View: Pursuing science of climate change never more vital. It
might seem out of sync to be talking about climate change and
global warming amid the cold, damp days of January in Flagstaff –
even as those topics dominate White House transition plans for
the EPA and the Department of Energy. But to the climate
scientists at NAU, the U.S. Forest Service, USGS and other local
agencies, it’s not about looking out the window and drawing
conclusions about global trends.

Trump's secretary of state nominee may soon testify in a global
warming trial. Alex Loznak is about to head into the second
semester of his sophomore year at Columbia University, but he's
not your typical student. He's one of 21 people, ages nine to 20,
suing the federal government for failing to protect them from the
damaging effects of climate change.

It’s Time to Hold Climate Change Policy-Makers Accountable. In
reaction to the election of Donald Trump California’s Governor,
state legislature and Air Resources Board have made clear their
intention to double down on our state’s already
strictest-in-the-nation climate change policies. Making such
claims is easy when ignoring the current cost burden of the
state’s climate policies…

As Donald Trump Denies Climate Change, These Kids Die of It. She
is just a frightened mom, worrying if her son will survive, and
certainly not fretting about American politics — for she has
never heard of either President Obama or Donald Trump. What about
America itself? Ranomasy, who lives in an isolated village on
this island of Madagascar off southern Africa, shakes her head.
It doesn’t ring any bells. Yet we Americans may be inadvertently
killing her infant son.
