Air Board to Hear Proposed Amendments to the Zero-Emission Vehicle Rules

SACRAMENTO -- Thursday the California Environmental Protection Agency's Air Resources Board (ARB) will consider proposed amendments to the state's zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) rules. To ensure the success of ZEVs, staff will present the Board with proposed amendments to the ZEV program, developed to address the challenges associated with the long-term introduction of ZEVs into the marketplace.

At its September 2000 meeting, the Board affirmed the importance of the ZEV program as a vital part of California's air quality strategy. The Board also directed staff to develop changes to the rule that would best assure development of a sustainable market for ZEVs.

The ZEV program, adopted in 1990, required 10 percent of new automobiles sold in California to be zero emitting in 2003.

The Air Resources Board is a department of the California Environmental Protection Agency. ARB's mission is to promote and protect public health, welfare, and ecological resources through effective reduction of air pollutants while recognizing and considering effects on the economy. The ARB oversees all air pollution control efforts in California to attain and maintain health based air quality standards.
