This page updated December 2, 2004.
| In July 1997, U.S. EPA established a new federal 8-hour standard for ozone of 0.085
parts per million. U.S. EPA designated fifteen areas in California that violate the federal 8-hour ozone
standard on April 15, 2004. Each nonattainment areas' classification and attainment deadline is based
on the severity of its ozone problem. Northern California nonattainment areas and attainment deadlines
are: San Joaquin Valley (2013), Sacramento Region (2013), San Francisco Bay Area (2007), Eastern Kern
County (2009 - 2014), Western Nevada County (2009 - 2014), Central Mountain Counties (Amador and Calaveras) (2009
- 2014), Southern Mountain Counties (Tuolumne and Mariposa) (2009 - 2014), Butte County (2009 - 2014), and the
Sutter Buttes (2009 - 2014). |
| SIPs demonstrating attainment of the new federal ozone standard must be adopted by
the local air districts and ARB, and submitted to U.S. EPA by June 15, 2007. ARB, air districts, and
other key stakeholders are coordinating development of local SIPs through the Northern California 8-Hour Ozone
SIP Working Group. The Working Group provides a forum for the sharing of technical information and for
ensuring that each area's SIP is consistent with attainment throughout the region. |
