Ocean-Going Vessels - Fuel Rule

This page last reviewed July 2, 2012

Background:
This webpage provides information regarding a State of California regulation that requires the use of cleaner marine distillate fuels in ocean-going vessels that visit California seaports.  The California Air Resources Board adopted the regulation, “Fuel Sulfur and Other Operation Requirements for Ocean-Going Vessels within California Waters and 24 Nautical Miles of the California Baseline” on July 24, 2008.  This regulation is designed reduce particulate matter, oxides of nitrogen, and sulfur oxide emissions from ocean-going vessels; reductions that are necessary to improve air quality and public health in California.  This webpage is maintained to provide a single site to obtain information on regulatory notices and advisories, information on the regulatory status and rule-making, public workshops and meetings, and other related information.
