Mobile NOx and PM Aftertreatment System Field Trial
|
|
|
| Technology and Innovation |
| NxtGen is developing an innovative diesel engine aftertreatment system with applications for
both new engines and retrofits. NxtGen’s system produces syngas, a combination of hydrogen and carbon monoxide,
by reforming diesel fuel and engine exhaust. The syngas converts NOx to nitrogen and water in a lean
NOx trap. NxtGen’s system uses an innovative control strategy and dual NOx traps which enables an overall
system size reduction of up to 70 percent. Syngas will also be used for active regeneration of diesel particulate
filters. NxtGen is proposing to use syngas for active regeneration of both particulate filters and lean NOx traps.
This approach will enable NxtGen to provide a single, simpler, lower cost method for diesel aftertreatment
system regeneration at all engine temperatures, speeds and loads. |
| Emission Benefit |
| NxtGen’s system will meet the ARB’s requirement of 85 percent reduction. For retrofit
applications, NxtGen’s technology will reduce NOx emissions by 75 percent or more. For a 2004 model year heavy-duty
diesel truck (engine-out NOx 11.63 grams per mile), with annual mileage of 60,000 miles, this results in a NOx
emission reduction of approximately 0.64 tons per year and PM emission reduction of 0.016 tons. |
| Project Description |
| The field trial involves retrofitting NxtGen’s syngas-based aftertreatment system on ten trucks
to demonstrate greater than 75 percent NOx conversion efficiency in diesel exhaust emissions, 85 percent reduction
in PM emissions, and 5 percent net increase in fuel economy. The field trial will take place at a California
truck fleet. PM and NOx emissions and fuel economy changes will be monitored over 1,000 engine operating hours. The
project duration will be approximately 12.5 months. |
