Monitoring Network


LTADS enhanced monitoring efforts within the Tahoe Basin to provide air quality and meteorological data with comprehensive temporal and spatial coverage. The particulate matter data collected with the Two-Week-Samplers and the Mini-Volume-Samplers were also analyzed for composition (e.g., ions such as ammonium, nitrate, and phosphate; organic carbon, elemental carbon; metals, including phosphorus). Thus, LTADS generated a very extensive database suitable for additional analytical efforts. The general location of all the monitoring sites during LTADS can be seen on this map of the monitoring network.

The parameters monitored at each site are listed in the table below. The Site ID# relates back to the location map above. Clicking your mouse on the Site Name will provide a more detailed map of the site location. In addition, links in the Footnote/Legend section of the Table will provide photos of the monitoring equipment.

  Parameters Measured:
    CO = carbon monoxide
    O3 = ozone
    NOx = oxides of nitrogen
    NOy = total reactive oxides of nitrogen
    NO2 = nitrogen dioxide
    HNO3 = nitric acid
    NH3 = ammonia
    2.5 = PM2.5 (particulate matter <2.5µ in diameter)
    10 = PM10 (particulate matter <10µ in diameter)
    TSP = total suspended particulate matter
    Met = meteorology (usually temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction)
    Dep = atmospheric deposition by surrogate surface methods (dry, wet, or bulk)
  Measurement Methods:
    e = estimated by difference method (NOy - NO or NOx - NO)
    A = aloft or above-ground (~10 meters) measurement with Radar Wind Profiler, Mini-SODAR or plane
    B = beta attenuation monitor (continuous (hourly) particulate matter mass measurement) (exterior / interior)
    C = particle counter (>0.4µ and >4µ)
    D = coated denuders method (analyzed by automated colorimetry)
    F = Federal Reference Method sampler (24-hour, every 6th day filter-based particle mass sample)
    I = IMPROVE filter-based sampler (PM2.5 mass and composition; PM10 mass)
    L = laser-induced fluorescence method (also measures alkyl- & peroxy-nitrates in addition to NO2 & HNO3)
    M = mini-volume sampler (filter-based particle mass; runs 24-hours on buoys but 1-2 weeks elsewhere)
    S = surface or near-ground (~10 meters) measurement
    T = Two-Week-Sampler (2-week filter-based particle mass and composition measurement; includes denuders)
