| Below are two projects from the Extramural Research Program that have been
reviewed and are being recommended to the Board for funding, by the Research Screening Committee: |

"Responses to Short-Term Fluctuations in Particulate Air Pollution
in Asthmatic Children: Implications for Asthma Natural History," Part A University of California, Berkeley,
$1,976,053 |

This project will: 1) more precisely define the role(s) that different components
of particulate air pollution (PM), in combination with other ambient air pollutants, play in the acute respiratory
responses occurring in asthmatic children residing in the greater Fresno area and 2) determine how those acute
responses influence the progression of the disease over multiple critical growth years. Part A will have both
panel studies and longitudinal studies component. |
