A SO_x Emission Control Area (SECA) has been considered for an area that includes California coastal waters. This webpage describes a program to assess the health benefits of controlling ocean-going ship emissions of sulfur oxides (SO_x ). Ocean-going ships burn high-sulfur fuel oil, thereby emitting SO_x . With ship activity expected to increase, ship emissions of air pollutants, including SO_x , are also expected to increase. Because the prevailing winds in California transport these emissions on-shore, these emissions contribute to adverse health impacts, as well as ecological impacts through acid deposition. You may find detailed information about this program here. For more information about SECA activities, please contact Dongmin Luo Ph.D., P.E. of the Air Resources Board Research Division at (916) 324-8496 or via email at dluo@arb.ca.gov.
