Applied Expertise in Sustainability,
Climate Change, and Air Pollution


Michael A. Robert, Ph.D.

This seminar will explore a broad swath of applied environmental engineering expertise in the areas of sustainability, climate change and air pollution.  Drawing from experiences within academia, the public sector and technical entrepreneurship, practical examples of the transition from research and development to operational maturity and competitive advantage will be presented.  Grounded in a framework of sustainability, critical thinking and innovation, such topics will include multiple national and international relevant case studies generated by both American and European graduate students, the national security implications of climate change, the U.S. Navy Climate Change Roadmap and Energy Vision, the use of MIT’s System Dynamics framework in a climate change policy model and the pursuit of sustainability by the private sector as a key competency.  Particular focus will be given to timely and relevant air pollution issues.


Michael A. Robert, Ph.D., is currently employed by the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C. as a Branch Head.  Dr. Robert is the instructor of the 'Air Pollution Control Technologies' and 'Climate Change and Global Environmental Sustainability' graduate courses at Johns Hopkins University, as well as a co-instructor for the 'Air Resources Modeling and Management' and 'Modeling Contaminant Migration through Multimedia Systems' graduate courses.  He is a guest instructor at Ecole d’Ingénieurs Generaliste, Master’s Program in Environmental and Innovative Engineering, Sceaux, France and belongs to the American Academy of Environmental Engineers.  Dr. Robert previously worked for the California Air Resources Board's Research Division as the supervisor of a Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy Section, as an Air Resources Engineer within the Climate Change Mitigation and Emissions Research Section and as an Air Pollution Specialist within the Indoor Air Quality Section. Dr. Robert has also been employed by the Tennessee General Assembly House of Representatives.  Dr. Robert holds a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Davis where his dissertation focused on the source apportionment of ultrafine particulate matter. He also holds a Master of Engineering in Environmental Engineering and Science from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.  Dr. Robert is currently pursuing his Executive Master of Business Administration at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
