Emission factors for combustion of various vegetation fuel types have been developed by the U.S. Forest Service
and approved for use by the U.S. EPA and California Air Resources Board for purposes of smoke management emissions
forecasting. They are published in the "Air Quality Conformity Handbook -- A Handbook for Land
Managers," USDA -- Forest Service, Air Resources / Fire Management, Pacific Southwest Region (November,
1995).
The factors take into consideration vegetation type, fuel loading, and percent combustion. Three tables
of factors for different fuel types are available, one in MS Word 97 format for pile burns (Pile Burn
- 21 K), and two in Excel Spreadsheet format: USDA Table 7 - 16 K, and USDA Table
8 - 16 K
Updated emission factors and emission factors for additional fuel types are under development. They will be
posted on this web page as they become available.
