Hexavalent Chromium Emissions Testing Program

This page last reviewed December 18, 2007

As part of the Airborne Toxic Control Measure (ATCM) evaluation process, we conducted an emissions testing program at decorative chromium plating businesses. Most decorative chromium plating facilities use chemical fume suppressants to control chromium emissions. Hence, source testing has not been conducted at many of these facilities. The goal of the test program is to help us better characterize emissions occurring during the decorative chromium plating process.

PHASE I: PROTOCOL

The source tests were conducted by the ARB staff with the assistance of local air pollution control districts and the electroplating industry. The draft protocol outlines the emissions testing to be conducted at the first three facilities.

PHASE I: SOURCE TEST REPORTS

In the first phase of the emissions testing program we tested facilities with ventilation systems. This report is a compilation of the results from four source tests conducted during 2003 at three decorative hexavalent chromium platers in Southern California. As you review the reports, please keep in mind that the emission rate results from these tests SHOULD NOT be used to calculate hexavalent chromium emissions from each facility. The facilities have additional add-on controls to further reduce emissions and their production was sometimes supplemented. If the results are used to calculate actual hexavalent chromium emissions, they will not be representative.

PHASE II: TEST PLAN - THIRD TEST

The source tests in phase two of the emissions testing program are being conducted at decorative
chromium plating facilities without forced ventilation systems. The source test was conducted the week of May 24, 2004 in Fresno, California. The protocol for this source test is essentially the same as previous source tests done for phase II of the testing program in Sacramento earlier this year.

PHASE II: SOURCE TEST REPORTS

In the second phase of the emissions testing program we tested facilities without forced ventilation systems. All source test reports
have been finalized and are available for your review by clicking on the links provided below. The tests were conducted at facilities in California between 2004-2006.
