RULE 469
Sulfuric Acid Units

- (a) A person shall not discharge into the atmosphere from any sulfuric acid unit, effluent process gas containing
more than:
- 500 ppm of sulfur compounds expressed as sulfur dioxide, calculated on a dry basis averaged over a minimum
of 15 consecutive minutes.
- 90 kilograms (198.5 pounds) per hour of sulfur compounds expressed as sulfur dioxide.
- An owner or operator of a sulfuric acid production unit shall not discharge into the atmosphere any gases which
contain sulfuric acid mist in excess of 0.150 kilogram per metric ton (0.3 lb. per ton) of acid produced (the production
of such acid expressed as 100 percent H2SO4).
- Sulfuric Acid Mist means H2SO4, as measured by 40 CFR 60 Appendix A, Method 8 or such other test methods
and procedures prescribed by the Executive Officer.
- Sulfuric Acid Production Unit means any facility producing sulfuric acid by the contact process by burning
elemental sulfur, alkylation acid, hydrogen sulfide, organic sulfides and mercaptans, or acid sludge, but does
not include facilities where conversion to sulfuric acid is utilized primarily as a means of preventing emissions
to the atmosphere of sulfur dioxide or other sulfur compounds.
- The provisions of this subsection (b) shall not apply to sulfuric acid production units, the construction,
modification, or reconstruction of which commenced after August 17, 1971.
