Hello,
Im a deckhand for a fishing/whale watching operation in Orange
County. I am opposed to the proposed new regulations with all my
heart. Everyone i know opposed to these changes as well, wants to
see nothing but positive things for the environment as it only
helps my job i.e. better environment= more fish and mammals. To
require that boats change motors that cost at minimum of 30,000
dollars and have them replace it with a motor, that to date does
not exist, before the lifespan of the prior motors has expired is
absolutely wishful thinking. The community that is being affected
by this is the same one who always advocates for more protections
and does nothing but educate the current and future generations on
marine life and the things that affect it. As this is only the
public comment phase i want to recommend; changing the law so the
lifespan of the existing motors can be lived out, changing the law
so that engine companies are encouraged to create these new motors
that dont exist instead of stopping sales in CA because of non
compliance, and lastly encourage companies to change their motors
over the next "x" amount of years by giving them subsidies until
the law takes effect in year 2032 at which point the lifespan of
all exisitng motors should be over. I may not have the best ideas
for solving the clear issues this bill has but my livelihood will
be drastically changed if this bill were to pass today along with
thousands of others whose livelihoods depend on the water and the
boats that take them on it. Lastly consider the millions of people
a year who utilize this same industry as a means of
vacation/education/work/sightseeing and a whole lot more!
