| Comment | I am writing to urge you not to weaken the ZEV requirements as
proposed in the February 8th initial statement of reasons (ISOR).
The state of battery technology is indeed such that battery powered
electric vehicles are a possibility. In fact, they are already
being produced and the demand far exceeds supply.
Tesla Motors of San Carlos has been developing a lithium ion
powered electric vehicle since 2004. Even with minimal funding
(by automotive industry standards) and little automotive design
experience, they have succeeded in bringing their Roadster into
production this year. Reservations currently exceed 1000 cars,
and most of the orders were placed by people who have never even
driven the car.
Think about that -- the idea of a capable zero emissions vehicle
is so compelling that people are willing to place full price
deposits on a new car from an unknown manufacturer without even
test driving it.
Don't let the big auto lobbies weaken the ZEV mandate again. The
technology exists and the demand is enormous. Now is the time to
take action.
