The automotive industry will hem and haw and say that what's
required of them is impossible as long as they can get away with
it. I am among those who believe that we really only have ten
years to start turning the tide of climate change. Dramatic
changes well outside our current status quo are going to have to
be made. Technology will not be able to solve all of our problems
but it will be a huge component. We cannot afford to relax the
already minimal demands made of these auto manufacturers - if
anything we need to strengthen and enhance the pace and scale of
change. An increase in the number of low-emission vehicles and
plug-in hybrids available in the market should be part of what is
required of the automotive industry but at the same time there is
no reason to make things easier for some of the richest companies
on earth responsible for selling vehicles such as Hummers. If they
can come up with such destructive technology they can certainly
come up with more beneficial technologies under duress.
