| Comment | Time and again Governor Schwarzenegger has promoted "green"
technologies as a tool for not only reducing greenhouse-gas
emissions but as an engine of prosperity for California: creating
well-paying, high-tech jobs within the state as we pioneer
tomorrow's technologies. This is true with electric cars as
well--AC Propulsion, which is now converting Scions to electric
power, is just down the freeway from Pasadena in San Dimas, CA.
The public is ready for ZEVs. Priuses and other hybrids are
selling like hotcakes; some enterprising owners are even
converting them to plug-in hybrids themselves, rather than waiting
for Toyota to get around to manufacturing them. Now is not the
time to let the Big Three off the hook yet again. They fought
seat belts, they fought air bags, and they probably fought turn
signals when they were first required. They could build ZEVs if
they really wanted to, and the only way they'll want to is if
there's an assured market.
So, Ms. Nichols, please:
1. Require the full 25,000 ZEVs that automakers had promised for
2012-2014, and
2. Create a separate requirement for plug-in hybrids that lets
them replace the dirtiest vehicles in CARB's regulations, rather
than the cleanest ZEVs.
Choice for consumers means cleaner air for everyone.
