| Comment | I write to oppose the California Tropical Forest Standard. I
strongly support rain forest preservation and reforestation as part
of the solution to rising carbon emissions. However, these goals
should be part of the baseline, not traded off against slower
emissions reductions. In addition, as recent news on the fires in
the Brazilian rain forest have underlined, rain forest preservation
is difficult to monitor and enforce, and offsets like those
proposed have proven easy to "game". It will not be easy to reduce
emissions to the necessary extent, but we need to do the hard work,
not settle for misleading alternatives.
