SubjectThe Hydrogen Economy
Comment
The Dep't of Energy is developing higher temperature electric
generation turbines (2650 F) that can operate off the combustion of
hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen from natural gas is a known
technology that can leave carbon dioxide to be captured and
sequestered. The exhaust from a hydrogen turbine would be water
where half the hydrogen would come from the methane. The carbon
dioxide before being sequestered could be run through an Allam
cycle and produce additional power efficiently and with a small
planform. The hydrogen produced during off peak hours or from a
slightly larger gasifier/water gas shift system could be sold to
the vehicle marketplace (Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles) or be stored
at an order of magnitude less cost than battery storage (i.e., 25
kWh for tanks vs 250kWh to 500kWh for batteries). Such a system
would promote biomass as the primary renewable option as against
wind and solar. The above should be considered as part of the
Advanced Clean Cars Review.
