Subject | Comment on CARB improving ACT Rule |
Comment | My name is Katherine Palomares. I grew up in the city of Montclair and currently reside in Rancho Cucamonga. I'm writing to share my perspective as an Inland Empire resident, but also as the daughter of a truck driver in the region. I'm glad to see that CARB has decided to improve the ACT rule. However, we are at a point where more action needs to be taken in order to prioritize the community's health. In the Inland Empire, we live with the highest concentration of warehouses in the state. We need CARB to adjust zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales percentage for Class 7-8 trucks to start with 12% in 2024 and 80% by 2035. Last December, my family faced the tragic loss of my oldest brother. Now as we struggle through the COVID-19 crisis and look forward into the coming years, we are concerned more than ever for our health. My father has continued to work as an essential worker while mourning. I hope to see more decisions being made to protect his health as a driver and the health of the communities he drives in. We don't need market-based solutions for change. We don't need to allow corporations to pay for their ability to harm the environment. We need to be bold with regulations that guarantee protection for environmental and worker health. We are not able to live any of our lives fully when we suffer from poor air quality, which we know is disproportionately impacting communities of color, including my own family. Please consider strengthening the ACT at the June CARB Board meeting. We have already lost too many lives from the ongoing climate crisis, we can make this a turning point to protect as much life as possible. I appreciate your time in considering my comment. |
