Comment | To Whom it May Concern, As a recreational fisherman in California for nearly fifty years I am concerned about the future of our sport fishing fleet up and down our coast in terms of the unfair regulations that are being planned. This financially burdensome plans do not just affect the captains and those employed on deck of the vessels, but the thousands that enjoy being out on the water with family and friends, enjoying traditions passed down by generations of those that came before us. In addition, what of the tackle industry and how such mis-sighted regulations will negatively affect them? California has long been a leader in fishing tackle innovation, from rod and reel design and manufacturing, to terminal tackle companies that make lures, etc. If there aren't enough fisherman on the water because there are fewer boats or the trips are too expensive for many to afford, sales, and thus sales tax revenue, will be drastically reduced. Now is not the time for such a misguided move that affects so many. Perhaps grandfathering in more sensible air quality regulations is a better idea. How about focussing more attention on bigger air quality issues, such as smoke from our record number of fires? How about focussing more attention on the huge number of container ships lining our coast, with no end in sight of when they'll be unloaded, that have their engines running nonstop to run their generators and pumps, some of which dump sewage along our coast? I hope my concerns, and the concerns of thousands like me, are taken into consideration. It would be a shame to lose part of our heritage because of decisions being made by political leaders that are not sportsman and sports women, or by those that do not have a broader view of the implications of their decisions. Thank you for your time, Brandon Gilden |
