Comment | Hello, My name is Ethan Ballard and I have been an avid fisherman for many years. Some of my first experiences with fishing came from fishing San Diego fishing charters with my uncle. Whether on the Dolphin or on the Condor, I have continued this hobby into adulthood and contributed hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars into the local economy by doing so. An increase in ticket prices- necessitated by mandating Captains to update or replace their boats/boat engines, would make driving the 2 hours to San Diego unfeasible for myself and others. San Diego has developed a reputation as a sport fishing capital, and to pass legislation that would lead to its demise is not only unfair to those working within the industry, but also to those who take enjoyment in the services offered. I have many years left in my life, with many more fishing trips planned. To be denied access to one of California's greatest natural resources, our vast amount of coast line and fishing grounds, I would feel cheated. Such a denial would be akin to preventing one from seeing the magnificence of Half dome in Yosemite, or the great sand dunes in Glamis, or the white shining slopes of Mammoth. I understand the drive and need to preserve California's clean air and blue water, but by preventing people from enjoying these things, a fundamental love is lost. A love that is needed to garner interest to establish conservation measures. How can we love what we cannot see? What we cannot experience? What is withheld from us behind a steep paywall? We cannot; and by removing this love we remove the desire to protect the very waters this legislation aims to preserve. I ask for you to reconsider this legislation, to continue to allow the people of California to enjoy one of our most stunning natural beauties. |
