Subject | My view as a 17 year old on CARB |
Comment | Dear CARB Board, My name is Maffick Arie, I am a 17 y/o student, lover of the ocean and craftsman. All my life I've been active around our beautiful coast; and have partaken in a few boat projects: buying, fixing and selling boats. I am really grateful for all these experiences and how they have helped me grow as a member of society.Though recently I have seen a spike in the California Government trying to limit these life changing experiences. I will admit, some of the goals that CARB aspire to meet are great when looked at in a glance, but in the long run this could be quite harmful to local Californians like me. If CARB is interested in helping the environment improve why target boats when there are much more cars destroying our environment? In the United States alone there are only 9.7 million boats, now this may seem like a lot but in comparison to the amount of cars in the United States (286.9 million) this number is quite small (let alone the amount of cars in California: 14 million). Likewise, by enforcing all boats forward to be made of metal or other expensive materials you steal the opportunity of owning a boat from teens like me, families who are not upper class, and local fishermen trying to catch a dinner. I honestly don't think there could be anything worse than stealing lifestyles of millions, watching while the higher class people go out on the water in their million dollar boats. It's a heartbreaking thought. On the other hand, think of the amount of waste and/or environmental impact that manufacturing aluminum, plastic or other boats will have: no matter what material you use there will always be a toll on the environment; don't try and abolish these boats when you can find better alternatives in making them. Lastly, please don't steal my (and millions of other kids) childhood. Boats are our lives. We live on the coast, seeking adventures, and exploring the sea. Don't take our lifestyle. There are millions of other potential ways to save the ocean, be the one who helps the ocean and its community, don't hurt it. Thank you for your time and understanding -Maffick Arie |
